A Cub Koda Story submitted by Scotty Miller

Cub & Scotty

Cub was so patient with my dumb hillbilly ass it still amazes me...
That’s how Cub was. His friendships were solid because he truly cared and loved his friends.

My story is about Cub in the 80's. He and Lady J took me under their wings and got me out of the lousy town I was in. They changed my life drastically and absolutely for the better. Cub was so patient with my dumb hillbilly ass it still amazes me. He started me out as road crew and we'd drive down to Boston or wherever and I'd load in, tune him up and such. Right off he encouraged me to come over to his place and play guitar with him. The first time I was shellshocked at how great he was, and it was the same every time after that. He started teaching me and made me listen to Bo, Lefty, Magic Sam and all the Greats. He could play like any one of them at any time.

Of course I was into the 80's metal dudes, but he put up with me like I said. He put me in his band and started me on a new life. He taught me about many things in life besides music, like White Castle cheeseburgers and WhataBurgers down in Texas. Wafflehouse and Old Golds. Mainly he taught me to not take shit from anyone and he became my big brother. Lady J is still my big sister. Around the time Motley Crue recorded  'Smokin’ in the Boys' Room,' Cub started writing songs geared for the 80's scene. We weren’t up to the level of The Points or Brownsville, but Cub never told us that. He kept us positive and always put on a show and worked the crowd no matter what. We were on the road a lot. Five years' worth, I guess.

To put it simply, he wanted me in his life even though I wasn’t all that good. That’s how Cub was. His friendships were solid because he truly cared and loved his friends. He wanted us all onboard his ride and he was driving. Right up to the day he died we kept in touch. And he encouraged me to write songs and be myself. I’ll be grateful to him the rest of my life for letting me be a part of his.

Love ya Cub and you too J.
